5th Grade Procedures and Expectations

Communication Folders/Weekly Reports
Your child will be given a daily/weekly communication folder. Each teacher will use this folder as a means to send work home in addition to school notices. This is the best way for you to keep aware of how your child is doing at school, as well as to find permission slips, menus, charge notices, PTO flyers, etc. Please take the time to go through your child’s work. You may also use this daily communication folder to send any correspondence to us. Students are allowed to correct work; however, their grades will remain the same. Information will come soon about this. In addition, we may send home tests or quizzes earlier in the week in your child’s folder.
Emails
Emails are sent several times a week to keep you informed of what is going on. To help minimize the amount of emails you get, many TEAM EMAILS will be sent by Mrs. Borders. Our GRADE LEVEL WEBSITE and the WEEKLY HOMEWORK AGENDA is the BEST place to stay informed and it is updated throughout the week. They will keep you informed of the things going on in your child’s classroom, team and school.
PLEASE do not send transportation changes to our emails. These MUST be done through the front office. There are days when we do not check email until after the students have been dismissed. If you send something important, it will not be addressed until the afternoon.
Text Messages(REMIND)
We will send out texts to remind you of important events or last minute information. This is the BEST way to get last minute information.
To receive messages via text, please visit https://www.remind.com/join/bfd8af
WHAT IS REMIND AND WHY IS IT SAFE? Remind is a free, safe, and simple messaging tool that helps teachers share important updates and reminders with students & parents. Subscribe by text, email or using the Remind app. All personal information is kept private. Teachers will never see your phone number, nor will you see theirs. Replying to Remind texts does not work as well so you will not have to worry about that! Visit remind.com to learn more.

Homework, Tests, Agendas
Homework is a very important part of our class and will be assigned to give students the opportunity to practice what has been learned in class. You can expect that homework should last an average of 50 minutes per night. This does not include reading at least 20 minutes each night. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. You can expect to see Math nightly in addition to the Reading. You can access this from the Homework Agenda or from the Peeples Website under Student Links. Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies homework will be assigned throughout the year. PLEASE see the WEEKLY HOMEWORK AGENDA for assignments. This is used by the entire grade level.
Students are expected to complete homework each evening and return it to school the following day. In the event that there is some problem concerning homework, please email us or send us a note. If a student fails to bring in homework on the day it is due, the student will be expected to complete it during the school day. We will use recess and Lunch and Learn for this.
This year we will be MATH COMPACTING between the two teams. Math compacting involves students being pretested in each math unit. Teachers will use results to establish classes for the unit. Pretests will NOT be sent home. In addition, it is important to note that EACH TEACHER will rotate and teach a different level each unit. No teacher will have the same level all year long. ALL Math tests will need to be signed and returned this year. They will be kept in their data notebooks.
To determine what homework your child has for Math, you will need to look at the WEEKLY HOMEWORK AGENDA. Your child can tell you which class he or she is in. You will look at that teacher's Math section.
Please look at the WEEKLY HOMEWORK AGENDA agenda each evening. A link is provided on the front page of our website, and it can also be located on any email from your child's teacher. We also recommend that you check to see that your child has completed the assignments for the evening.
Please make sure that your child is aware that if you write a note in the agenda that he or she brings it to our attention. In addition, do not send in transportation changes in the agenda. Students MUST bring in a letter that can be turned into the office stating a transportation change. If you have an important note that you need to get to us, please write it down on a separate sheet of paper or email us.
Classroom Management
Because our foremost priority is to provide each child with a safe and nurturing environment for learning, students will be expected to follow the policies and procedures set forth on the 5th Grade website as well as adhere to the Peeples and Fayette County School System Code of Conduct. Should a problem arise, we will meet with the child to discuss, think about, and develop a solution to his or her problem. When necessary, students will be referred to the office. We may also use various signals in our classrooms such as counting or “Gimme 5” to transition students from one activity to another.
This year we will work to teach 21st century leadership and life skills to students and create a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. We will be implementing the Leader in Me program school wide. You can read about this amazing program here. We will also implement our school wide SOAR code.

Classroom Comfort and Manners
Snack Time:
Students will have a working snack time each morning. Please send an easy, healthy snack food. Snack time will be permitted as long as snacks are neatly eaten with good manners.
Temperature:
It is difficult to keep the room a temperature that is comfortable for all students. A light jacket can be kept in the book bag if your child tends to be cold natured.
Manners:
We expect students to exhibit good manners in our classrooms. Some examples of this include waiting outside the classroom in a straight, silent line when the teacher is not in the room. Once signaled by the teacher, the student may enter the room silently and listen for instructions. In addition, at the end of the day, we expect the desk areas and cubbies to be tidy. We all have to spend our time in this room; therefore, it should be neat. We will discuss with the students our expectations as we go through these first few weeks of school.
Late/Missing Work and Infinite Campus
All assignments should be completed and turned in on the date assigned by the classroom teacher; however, in the event that an assignment is not completed on time, students will be given several opportunities during the school day to complete the work using such times as morning work time, specials, lunch, and recess. On occasions, the assignment may be sent home to finish. Assignments that are taken for a grade at school may not be sent home to finish and return for a grade.
It is our goal to encourage students to become self-disciplined and responsible regarding schoolwork. One way to encourage this behavior is by monitoring grades online. We will teach the students how to access their Infinite Campus accounts after the first progress report. Feel free to review grades with your children at home. If you notice that your child has some missing assignments, we request that parents do not contact us regarding missing assignments. We want the students to learn to accept responsibility and come to the teacher to discuss the missing assignment. If a student is missing an assignment, the student MUST make arrangements with the teacher to make this assignment up. The teacher will determine if the assignment can be made up at home or needs to be completed at school. Grades in Infinite Campus will reflect missing assignments. The reason we do this is to show the students the impact that missing assignments has on a child’s overall grade. At the end of the nine weeks grading period, ANY assignments that have not been turned in and are recorded as zeros will receive a 65 in the gradebook.
**Missing assignments due to excused absences will be handled by the policy stated in the Peeples Student Handbook.
