Inherited & Acquired Traits
S5L2
Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information showing that some characteristics of organisms are inherited and other characteristics are acquired. a. Ask questions to compare and contrast instincts and learned behaviors. b. Ask questions to compare and contrast inherited and acquired physical traits. |
.Many characteristics of an organism are inherited from the parents of the organism, but other characteristics result from an individual's interactions with the environment.
Instincts, like songs and mating dances for some birds, are behaviors that are inherited from parents. Other behaviors, such as the ability to ride a bicycle, are learned through interactions with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation. Many physical traits, like the color of flowers and the number of limbs of an animal, are also inherited. Other physical features, such as broken limbs in a tree or artificial hair color in humans, develop through interactions with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation |
Vocabulary Words
Trait = a quality, characteristic, feature of an organism
Acquire = learn or develop after birth as a result of the environment
Inherited = a quality or characteristic that you are born with (because of genetics)
Instinct = inherited behavior
All organisms have physical features that are inherited, and they may have others that are acquired. Acquired physical traits result from the organism interacting with its surroundings.
Organisms also have behaviors that are inherited (instincts), and they may have others that are learned (e.g., fish going to the top of a tank at feeding time, a talking parrot, etc.)
