Grading
Reading & Language Arts
Our new core resource for K-5 English Language Arts, Pearson’s ReadyGEN. ReadyGEN is a 21st Century literacy program created for 21st Century students. This resource provides authentic texts written by celebrated authors, digital resources to support learning for all students, unit themes that actively engage students, and a well-balanced instructional approach that integrates reading and writing.
There are a few specific learning activities I would like to point out that may look different than what you’ve seen your child bring home in the past.

There are a few specific learning activities I would like to point out that may look different than what you’ve seen your child bring home in the past.
- Students will participate in word study activities that lead them to examine words so they they are able to understand the patterns and connections within our written language system, and help students achieve mastery in reading, spelling, and defining words.
- Spelling will not be a separate, disconnected activity, but rather, a tool for understanding the phonological (sounds), orthographic (symbols), and morphological (meaning) patterns that our language is built upon. Grade level spelling skills and strategies may be monitored and assessed on a continuous basis as opposed to a weekly spelling test.
- Through ReadyGEN, students will use authentic texts in the form of books like you can check out of the library, a magazine style book with all types of writing included, decodable books that practice the foundational skills, and more electronic texts than we can count.
- Through ReadyGEN, students will see an increase in the required amount of written responses to what is read. Students will be writing as an avenue for deeper, more critical thinking about what they are reading, or what is being read to them for our younger students.
